Glitch Beam Fabrication for Contractors: What to Specify, What to Inspect

If you’re a contractor sourcing a glitch beam for a structural steel package, the fastest way to avoid delays is to send a complete spec and confirm the shop can meet it. Below is a practical checklist you can use when requesting quotes and when receiving fabricated members.

1) What to include in your RFQ

  • Project location + required delivery date (or pickup window)

  • Member mark(s), quantity, and overall length

  • Material grade (e.g., ASTM A992/A572) and any Charpy requirements

  • Connection details: plates, holes, slots, cope/camber, weld symbols, and bolt spec

  • Finish requirements (prime/paint/galv) and surface prep

2) Shop checks that prevent field headaches

  • Verify hole patterns against the latest drawings before drilling.

  • Confirm weld procedure + welder qualifications match the required code/spec.

  • Check camber/sweep/twist tolerances before shipping.

  • Label member marks clearly so your crew can stage and set quickly.

3) Receiving checklist (quick field inspection)

  • Count pieces and match member marks to the packing list.

  • Spot-check critical dimensions and hole spacing.

  • Inspect welds and note any shipping damage immediately.
